James Kalm has been curious to see the Nick Cave show at the new Jack Shainman Gallery for months. Stories about this incredible space and the renovation have been appearing in the local art press for a couple of years, but as with any construction project in New York City, even the best subcontractor’s timelines get stretched out. The top floor of this building, known as the Clocktower, was the oldest alternative art space in Manhattan, founded by Alanna Heiss with her Institute of Art and Urban Resources in 1972.
This show features three major sculptures, and several wall mounted assemblages. The “Amalgam” sculptures riff on Cave’s “Soundsuit” costumes which bring the artist’s interests in textile and dance together, and may depict forest “green men” festooned with leaves, branches and bird figurines. The “Graphts” are assemblage works crafted from mass produced metal serving trays, vintage tole, and needlepoint, giving an historic patina over kitsch housewares.
