✅ Description:
Subject: Science 3
Grade Level: Grade 3
Quarter: 4th Quarter
Week & Day: Week 1 – Day 3
Lesson Title: Importance of Non-Living Things in the Environment
Curriculum: Revised K–12 MATATAG
Why do we need things that aren't alive? In this final lesson for the week, learners will discover that living things like humans, plants, and animals cannot survive without non-living things. We will explore how soil, water, air, and sunlight work together to support life on Earth.
By the end of this session, students will realize that even a simple rock or a breath of air plays a huge role in our environment.
Topics Covered:
Life Support Systems: How non-living things provide the basic needs for living things.
The Role of Water: For drinking, cleaning, and habitat.
The Role of Soil: For growing food and providing homes for animals.\
The Role of Air and Sunlight: For breathing and making plant food (photosynthesis).Human-Made Objects: How man-made non-living things (houses, clothes) protect us.
🌍 Why We Need Non-Living ThingsLiving things and non-living things are partners! Here is how they help us:Sunlight: Provides light so we can see and heat to keep the Earth warm. Plants need it to grow.Water: All living things must drink water to stay alive. It is also home to fish and other sea creatures.Air: We need oxygen from the air to breathe.Soil: This is where our food grows. It also holds the roots of trees that give us shade.Rocks: Used for building houses and roads.
💡 The Big Picture: Helping Each OtherWithout non-living things, the Earth would be empty!Non-Living ThingImportance to LifeAirHumans and animals use it to breathe.WaterUsed for thirst, bathing, and farming.SoilProvides nutrients for plants to produce fruits and vegetables.SunlightThe main source of energy for the whole world.
🎯 Objectives:By the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:
✔ Explain the importance of natural non-living things (air, water, soil, sunlight) to living things.
✔ Discuss how human-made non-living things help us in our daily lives.
✔ Express appreciation for the environment through a simple "Thank You" drawing or message to nature.
📌 This lesson instills a sense of stewardship, teaching students that protecting our non-living resources (like keeping water clean) is the only way to protect living things.
