Seeker Question: Sri Bhagavan, How to become aware of my inner world?
Sri Bhagavan:
You should basically start with the physical awareness, it could deal with normal physical activities of which we have quite unaware of what we have made it into a habit, like brushing your teeth. In the mornings when you brush your teeth, you do it very mechanically. You should do it with great awareness, feeling the brush moving against your teeth, your gums, the sensation it creates.Such activity is OK. Then your morning Bath or whatever it is, how the water runs to the body and the sensations that the body generates. Normally you have made it into a habit, you're not aware of what's going on. So you could become aware of it. And then while eating, the mind tends to be distracted, instead you can focus on the food, its taste, its texture, its smell, you could do that.
Then walking, for example, you could be aware of the complex things that involved in the body in making you walk, how the muscles are functioning, how the hands and legs are moving, you start watching all those things. Or let us say any song for that matter whether you are paying attention to the sound, or you are getting distracted.The most ideal thing would be to do physical activity which have become a habit to you. If you bring awareness to these things, you would get quite a new experience. Another thing you could try is, you could bend your head and look between your legs upside-down, then also you will feel that you begin to see things differently, the habit is breaking.
The key is, do things which you normally do but become intensely aware of them. You could do any activity based on your culture and if you can bring a change to it, like for example, looking beneath your legs, then it is much more effective.
And the other thing is to break the habit, like for example, if you go for a morning walk, for a few days you could go for an evening walk, then also the habit is likely to change. And the other thing you could do is, go to places which you have never gone before, then the mind would have some difficulty in relating to it. It could break the pattern. It could even be a marketplace, it could be a busy place, it could be anything. Something which is new, which can be a challenge to your mind because you're not used to it.
If you keep doing this for roughly 49 minutes a day, it could be intervals of seven, it could be 7 minutes 14, 21, 28, like multiples of 7. And for 21 days, strangely the brain breaks the habit of being unaware. It makes you become more and more aware. That awareness you could slowly move inside, and then you become aware of what is going on inside, the rest is all very automatic, there's nothing for you to do, except just being aware, that's all. Everything else is automatic.
