At 12 miles round trip, the Marion Mountain Trail is the most direct route to the summit of San Jacinto Peak from Idyllwild. Other options include the Devils Slide, Deer Springs, and Seven Pines trails; however, these will take you longer to reach the summit.
The Marion Mountain Trail steeply ascends 2400 feet in the first 2.8 miles to the junction with the PCT, averaging over 850’ per mile. From the PCT junction, the trail rises another 1100 feet over 2 miles to Little Round Valley, a popular backpacking camping destination. From here, a series of switchbacks climb 750 feet over one mile to the peak trail junction. The last third of a mile to the summit gains 300 feet, ending with a scramble through boulders beginning just past the stone hut.
We highly recommend this invigorating hike, not just for the physical challenge it offers but for the breathtaking views of San Gorgonio, the Coachella Valley, the expansive LA Basin, and the Sierra vibes evoked by the majestic pines and rugged granite boulders along this trail.
Day use permits are required, obtain one at the San Jacinto Ranger Station at 54270 Pine Crest Ave, Idyllwild-Pine Cove, CA 92549 on your way to the trailhead.
