The sounds and calls of flying foxes in the wild. Flying fox calls generally consist of squealing, shrieking and cackling sounds as they squabble at a feeding tree or at their roosting colony. In flight, their large, leathery wings make a distinctive heavy, flapping sound.
Flying foxes (also known as fruit bats) include some of the largest bat species in the world. Grey-headed Flying Fox (Pteropus poliocephalus) is the species in the background image of the video and has a wingspan of around 1 m (3.3 ft). The audio on this video is a comp featuring the sounds of Little Red Flying Foxes (Pteropus scapulatus) squabbling & the wingflaps of a Black Flying Fox.
During the day, flying foxes roost in large, sometimes noisy colonies. As night approaches they disperse to feed on fruiting or flowering trees, often hundreds of them can be seen as silhouettes in the dusk sky as they fly out from their day roosts.
