Joe Tilley's interview features two legendary goaltenders, Gary "Axe" Smith and Ken "Spider" Lockett, sharing incredible stories from their pro hockey careers. Gary Smith comes from NHL royalty (father Des and brother Brian both played in the league), won the 1964 Memorial Cup with the Marlboros, played on the last Leafs Stanley Cup-winning team (1967), co-won the Vezina Trophy with Tony Esposito in Chicago, and earned the nickname "Axe" and "The Wanderer" for his adventurous crease-leaving style that led to a rule change. He endured tough times with the California Golden Seals (white skates and all), battled Ken Dryden in epic 1975 playoff series with Vancouver, played alongside a 17-year-old Wayne Gretzky in Indianapolis, won the Avco Cup with Winnipeg Jets, and later transitioned to horse racing. Ken "Spider" Lockett took a winding path through Fort Wayne, Guelph, and Baltimore before reaching the NHL with Vancouver, where he set a franchise record 184-minute shutout streak, made spectacular saves against Chicago in a memorable 1975 Game of the Week, faced the Soviet Red Army team in the WHA with San Diego Mariners, and shares stories about competing for jobs, memorable characters, and their championship experiences across both leagues.
