Welcome to the 1st McDonald’s! Can I take your order?
Join us as we give a full tour of the museum set inside the Original McDonalds in San Bernardino, CA! This was the 1st McDonald’s that ever opened. McDonald’s opened in the year 1940 by brothers Maurice (“Mac”) and Richard McDonald.
FYI we filmed this in 2021 so there was a mask policy in place at the time. That may not be enforced anymore.
It’s located in California on the historical Route 66! If you are planning on doing a Route 66 road trip this is perfect place to start at! Located at 1398 N E St, San Bernardino, CA 92405.
It is always debated as to whether this location is the first, since the Des Plaines McDonalds in Illinois also claims that, but the Illinois one was actually opened 15 years after this original one.
This was such a fun museum to visit! There is over 80 years of McDonald’s artifacts in the McDonald’s museum! The best part is that it’s absolutely free to enter and there’s free parking. What? Free things to do in California?! I’m sold.
This McDonald’s museum is packed with nostalgia, history and memorabilia. The second you enter the parking lot you are hit with nostalgia! Just seeing the original McDonald’s still standing with the original signage is cool enough! We start off by walking around the exterior of the museum. A world famous mural of Route 66 and other historical events in CA, is painted all around the walls of this McDonald’s. It’s known for being the most detailed mural in the U.S.! The outside has some of the best photo ops! There’s McDonald’s artifacts all along the building! There’s McDonald’s playground equipment from the 1980’s like the Officer Big Mac jail, a statue of the Hamburglar, the McDonaldland Tree that was in the Play Place and much more! There are original antique coin operated rides on the side of the building too! There also random pop culture statues. Some are Looney Tunes…possibly from 6 Flags??? There was a Scooby Doo Mystery Machine parked at the museum as well!
Once you go inside the original McDonald’s, you won’t find food for sale. The original McDonald’s property has since been purchased by the owner of local chicken restaurant Juan Pollo and converted into a McDonald’s museum.
The entrance of the original McDonald’s has a McDonald’s historian at the counter. He was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. There are free McDonald’s history pamphlets available, that you can keep. There’s a mini gift shop with souvenirs and penny press machine with unique McDonald’s designs on it!
The 1st thing that catches your eye is the huge waving Ronald McDonald statue! You’ll also get to see an actual McDonald’s mascot costume of Evil Grimace! They also have original Speedee mascot antiques in the museum to look at as well.
The rest of the museum is crammed with the coolest vintage McDonald’s artifacts! They have vintage McDonald’s toys, McDonald’s Halloween buckets, vintage happy meal boxes, vintage McDonald’s uniforms, McDonald’s high chairs, vintage McDonald’s Christmas ornaments, McDonald’s toy displays, vintage McDonald’s signage, McDonald’s collectibles and much more! There is over 80 years worth of McDonald’s history in this museum! Theres vintage McDonald’s items from the original restaurant like milkshakes makers all the way to current displays like the celebrity meals. There’s even half eaten Travis Scott celebrity meal preserved on display!
It’s not just artifacts. The owner has interesting McDonald’s historical facts and photographs framed throughout the museum!
I highly recommend visiting this museum! Thank you for watching! Please comment, like & subscribe
