David Schild, Executive Director of the Printed Circuit Board Association of America (PCBAA) has been tirelessly advocating for the PCB industry in Washington DC for three+ years, and he updates EMSNOW about their activities during the last few very eventful months.
The U.S. has big dreams for technology, he says, including the Artemis lunar return, AI data centers, military and aerospace defense systems. But all these big dreams are built on the back of sufficient micro-electronics manufacturing capacity, which the country lacks. Lawmakers are waking up to that reality, however. The Senate Armed Services Committee, the Department of Commerce, and others are realizing that security comes from technology independence, and that includes not just semiconductors, but the PCBs and packaging technologies that go along with them. PCBAA's new messaging is 'Reshoring and Restoring'; in this conversation he explains to EMSNOW the details of how that is being enacted in legislation that will make a difference.
