Drive By Wire (DBW) Systems Are Trying To Kill You (But Not Really)

Despite some anecdotal opinions out there, drive by wire throttle technology is well proven to be safe and reliable for usage in OEM applications, but what about in motorsports where vibrations are well beyond what a car ever sees on the street?

While a compliance (excessive movement) is normally the enemy on a race car, when it comes to our DBW throttle setup the vibrations transferred to the unit in a motorsport setting can cause the unit to go into a safety mode which doesn't put the car at risk, but does ruin any chance of setting a lap. Given the limited chances you get to do that in time attack, it is a risk that many teams are now mitigating via the use of Wiggins style clamps to isolate the DBW unit away from some of the vibrations caused by high speed, solid suspension and engine components etc.
