Day 26 of main house rebar. Finished off the last sand layer on top of the breakfast nook foundation pad. Then we got back to placing and securing our top layer of footing rebar. This is two rows of #5 rebar side by side running along every footing near the earth grade level. We check our elevation (height) using our laser level. The outer long sections are easier to install. But when you start doing the cross footings you have to start adding extra supports to hold the rebar at the correct height. Remember rebar cannot connect to the ground directly or it can eventually rust. Might take 10, 20, 30 or 40 years. But when rebar steel is exposed to water and air it will eventually rust. The contact with earth has to be avoided. So how do you suspend a pieces of rebar 2 feet of the ground out in the middle of a foundation? Well we figured out a solution. You can take a piece of rebar and bend it into an L shape. Flip the L upside down and put the end of the rod (pointy end of the L) into the hole of a 3x4x5 inch concrete dobie. That protects the rebar from touching the ground and secures it into a good location that it can’t slip out of. But it’s still not the minimum 3 inches off the ground. So we place another 3x3 inch dobie underneath to raise up the L and then you are legal and keeping your rebar off the ground. When you cut the long length of the L to your desired final height you can slip the short part of the L under the upper rebar rods and hold them up. We then secure the L to the lower and upper rebar with wire ties to hold everything firmly in place.
