In this time lapse I am hand coloring a Chrysler from the 1950s which is part of a private collection in Joshua Tree, California.
I printed it with my Epson P20000 inkjet printer at 16x12 inches on Breathing Color’s Vibrance Matte inkjet paper. I know I used my P20000, which is a bit of overkill for this size photo, but you can print on this type of paper with any inkjet printer at a smaller size too if necessary.
I mounted it on a backboard to give it some support and to prevent warping of the paper. I Sprayed it two times with a varnish and then when that was dry I painted on Golden Gloss Glazing Liquid, which is an acrylic medium which turns transparent when dry.
After these preparation steps it is ready to be colored with oil glazes which I make by mixing liquin impasto and oil paint.
This is a good alternative to Marshall Photo Oils and I work the same way as I also use cotton rounds and cotton swabs.
The advantage of using oil glazes on an acrylic coating is that you can still easily remove the paint, for example to make corrections, as you can see I'm doing also in this video.
