Was Olympias, the mother of Alexander the Great, the most formidable woman in history? Throughout Alexander's early years, she instilled in him the belief that his true father was the Greek god Zeus, and that his destiny was to become a conqueror.
Engaging in dark arts, she kept snakes in her bedroom and practiced witchcraft through secret rituals, all aimed at safeguarding Alexander and ensuring his triumph in battles.
umoRrs suggest her involvement in the assassination of her husband, King Philip of Macedonia, who she believed was sidelining Alexander in favor of his half-brother.
Following Alexander's ascent to the throne, Olympias compelled another of Philip's wives, who had replaced her as the favored one, to witness the burning of her infant daughter.
Olympias then presented the distraught woman with a choice of three gifts – a rope, a dagger, and poison – allowing her to determine her own fate. Even Alexander found himself appalled by his mother's actions, though he refrained from punishing her.
Ultimately, Olympias met her end through stoning at the hands of the families of her numerous victims.
