Fell December 10, 2024 in Indiana, United States
The Amo meteorite fell in Indiana on December 10, 2024. Witnesses reported seeing a bright bolide in the sky at 4:04EST. M. Fries of Johnson Space Center used data from NEXRAD radars and the radar at the Indianapolis airport to create a strewnfield map, which included the town of Amo, among others. Meteorite hunters C. Dietrich and S. Arnold found the first stones of the Amo meteorite on December 11. R. Ward would eventually find the largest Amo specimen, weighing 56 kilograms.
Amo meteorites are very dark, fusion-crusted stones. Most individuals have broken upon impact with the Earth’s surface, revealing a light-colored interior. Slices of the Amo meteorite reveal metal flecks and a smattering of chondrules and some melt pockets. Collectors and meteorite enthusiasts will note the particularly rich fusion crust that Amo meteorites proudly sport on their exterior, as well as the attractive interior, consistent with L5 stone meteorites.
