Welcome back to The Emerging Scholar Podcast! In this special bonus episode, a teaser of what's to come for Season 2, we’re honoured to speak with a true legend in clinical epidemiology—Dr. Gordon Guyatt.
Dr. Guyatt, a distinguished professor at McMaster University, is internationally recognized for coining the term evidence-based medicine (EBM), a transformative approach that reshaped how clinicians integrate research evidence, clinical expertise, and patient values in decision-making. He also led the development of the globally adopted GRADE framework, used by over 100 organizations—including the WHO—to assess healthcare recommendations.
His work has been instrumental in advancing methodologies for clinical trials, systematic reviews, and the development of clinical practice guidelines. In recognition of his groundbreaking work, Dr. Guyatt has received numerous accolades, including induction into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame, and currently he is on a cross country tour after receiving the very prestigious Henry Friesen Award from the Friends of CIHR, and we're fortunate to have him here in Winnipeg on June 2nd to present his work.
With over 1,500 peer-reviewed publications and more than 100,000 citations, Dr. Guyatt stands among the most influential figures in modern medicine. In this episode, we explore his early journey as a clinical investigator, the birth of EBM at McMaster, and its lasting impact on clinical research and medical education worldwide.
