What Force Analysis Can Tell You About Your Machining Process

Modern Machine Shop and TechSolve analyze some ugly machining passes. Watching poorly performing cuts while also watching corresponding cutting force profiles illustrates what force measurements can reveal about the process. Force monitoring in many cases is limited to just the machine’s spindle load monitor, but TechSolve, a manufacturing consulting firm, can measure forces more specifically and directly than this using a three-component dynamometer, a resource beyond the reach of many shops. The analysis can be useful for diagnosing the challenges of an application involving a difficult workpiece material and/or an unstable process, allowing the application to be made more consistent and reliable for unattended machining. In this video, see the force profiles resulting from (1) gradual tool failure, (2) cutting with a rake angle that is too highly positive for the process and (3) the development of a built-up edge.
