Inside look at student loan debt forgiveness scams

Описание: Telemarketers and online predators are tricking college students and grads into signing up for loan reduction help they'll never get.

The Federal Trade Commission warns student loan relief scams are cashing in on the out-of-control student loan debt crisis. Two common red flags: claims of a high success in reducing loan payments. Up front fees, which are illegal.

"What we think happens is consumers frequently, inadvertently, end up on what we call a lead list," said FTC Regional Director Chuck Harwood.

Lead generation lists are routinely compiled by collecting your personal information when you click on links (cookies) when searching for certain topics online - in this case student loan debt relief or student loan help. That's one way you end up with unsolicited email offers. Filling out "contact us" forms online can lead to email, phone calls and snail mail pitches from companies looking to make a sales pitch.
