After a week of pretty windy weather, the weekend fell with a small calm window, even threatening some sun. A great opportunity for a winter ascent of the Llech Ddu Spur.
The storminess of the preceding days had given us some snow to add to the excitement of the route, whilst making some of the higher steps and reaches of the scrambling that much more challenging. The cloud cover dropped but the weather stayed fairly stable, allowing us to complete the ridge and walk it up to the summit of Carnedd Dafydd.
ROUTE:
Parking - Limited spaces in bays along road Ffordd Gerlan (53.177213, -4.047784) or roadside parking in the same area. Note: Roads are narrow and consideration to residential area should be given and access respected.
Date - 02.03.24
Distance - 10.85km
Total Ascent - 876.67m
Type - Difficult - Includes Grade 1 Scramble along exposed ridge
Brief Description - Long approach walking up the Cwm Pen-Llafar valley. Following Afon Llafar on the RHS to reach the base of Crib Lem. The spur and ridge is gained by ascending to the RHS of the crag and cutting sharply back at around the 700m elevation mark. The scramble starts steep and then narrows as the ridge is gained proper. Following the crest of the ridge where possible until it eases to walk. Small walk South, South-West to Carnedd Dafydd summit. Following the sloping ridge down past Foel Meirch parallel to our approach.
