The Shadow Over Innsmouth by H.P. Lovecraft is a unique beast among cosmic horror contemporaries. Often, cosmic horror gets bogged down with abstract concepts and fails to utilize the dangers that make us fundamentally afraid, such as the fear of being someplace new, the fear of strangers, or even the fear of BEING a stranger. The Shadow Over Innsmouth makes no such mistake—and it’s able to masterfully bridge the gap between abstract and everyday fears.

H.P. Lovecraft is undeniably one of the most prolific horror writers of all time. This undisputed master of cosmic horror has crafted some of the most disturbing works in all of American literature, and he’s had a massive impact on the internet and analog horror landscape. I would argue that, today, no other author has made so great an impact on the horror genre than H.P. Lovecraft himself—and for me, The Shadow Over Innsmouth is the crown jewel of his impressive portfolio.
