F-roads of Iceland: F249 (Þórsmerkurvegur) (24.07 & 25.07.2020)

F249 is one of the most famous rugged F-roads of Iceland with numerous water crossings. The rivers are small in the beginning, but as the road progresses, they get wider and deeper. Krossá river is one of the most famous ones there and YouTube is full of videos people trying to ford it. Crossing this river demands a lot of caution and a vehicle with good ground clearance!! I believe it was 2019 summer when a tourist couple got stuck in Krossá with a small-sized SUV and unfortunately one of them didn't make it out alive.

I was very lucky with my first crossing, as I hit it with my fully stock Nissan Pathfinder, which also didn't have a snorkel. I didn't pick a good line and the current almost started to take me away. The second crossing in the next day went much smoother, as we picked a much more diagonal route over the river. The local man working in the Volcano Huts told me that each summer he has to pull out about 30 cars from the river.

F249 is about 32km long and in this video we don't cover the route in its full length, we stop at the Volcano Huts of Þórsmörk. F249 starts from the road 249 and to be honest, I didn't notice on exactly what point 249 changed into F249. I chose the first "4x4 vehicles only" warning as the starting point to F249.
