Ruth Goodman's is a British social historian with expertise in the British domestic scene from the Tudor era to the 1940s. This set of instructions is from her book, "Wartime Farm"
1. To mend, catch the loop of the running stitch in the hole. Turn the stocking out to the wrong side, & fold flat along the ladder.
2. Using thin matching silk thread, start below the ladder & run up one side & down the other, securing the loops at the top & bottom.
3. Neaten by over-sewing lightly, then turn the stockings the right way out once more. With any luck the mend won't show
