Many do-it-yourself taxpayers find that after they file their tax return, the return is rejected because the Prior Year Adjusted Gross Income or AGI does not match the IRS e-file database. The IRS requires that taxpayers provide the information from their prior year tax return so the IRS can verify your identity.
If you do not have your Prior Year Adjusted Gross Income or AGI, you can go to IRS.gov/transcript and get a transcript of your prior year return. The AGI will be on the transcript.
In some cases your prior year return information may not be loaded to the IRS e-file database because you filed on paper or the IRS has not yet processed your prior year return. This year due to COVID delays ( https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-oper... ) this is affecting more returns than normal.
If you are seeing a prior year AGI mismatch and you know that you are entering the correct prior year AGI, try entering zero (0) as your prior year AGI. If your return information is not in the IRS e-file database, usually entering the value zero will make it so your return will process.
