China Just Made It Harder for India to Dig Tunnels to the Border 🇮🇳

• Beijing's new export controls cover construction equipment, including tunnel-boring machines and machines that spray concrete at high altitude. They are due to take effect later this month.
• China says "sensitive countries and regions with disputes with China" will face stricter rules, and the curbs also cover spare parts.
• India is one of the main buyers. It is building roads, railways and tunnels in the Himalayas to cut the time it takes to move troops to the China border.
• This has happened before: in 2024 China held up German Herrenknecht machines built in China for India's bullet train and the Delhi Metro.
• India plans to spend up to $9.6 billion on tunnels in the next five years, and L&T is building its own prototype tunnel-borer.
