The 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT3 (officially the Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo) is a customer racing car developed by Mercedes-AMG for GT3-class competition worldwide. It competes in series like the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, Intercontinental GT Challenge, and various national GT championships.
Mercedes-AMG unveiled this evolved version in June 2019 at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, with homologation starting January 1, 2020. It updates the original GT3 model (introduced in 2015 and raced from 2016) with enhancements for performance, drivability, reliability, and reduced operating costs.
Key Updates in the 2020 Evo Package
Aerodynamics: Revised front splitter, larger rear diffuser, and updated rear wing for better downforce and stability.
Lighting and styling: New LED headlights and taillights, plus minor aesthetic tweaks to align closer with the road-going AMG GT facelift.
Reliability: Extended engine and component life (e.g., the V8 can run up to ~40,000 km between rebuilds), plus RFID tracking for parts.
Drivability: Improved ergonomics and setup flexibility, making it more accessible for amateur ("gentleman") drivers while remaining competitive for professionals.
Existing 2016-2019 GT3 owners could upgrade their cars to Evo spec with a kit for around €45,000.
Specifications
Engine: 6.3-liter (6,208 cc) naturally aspirated V8 (carried over from the SLS AMG GT3 predecessor for proven reliability).
Output varies by Balance of Performance (BoP) rules but typically around 550-600 hp and 650 Nm of torque.
Transmission: 6-speed sequential racing gearbox.
Drivetrain: Rear-wheel drive.
Chassis: Aluminum spaceframe with carbon-fiber bodywork.
Weight: Approximately 1,285-1,300 kg (homologated base around 1,285 kg, depending on configuration).
Price: New cars started around $441,000 (sprint spec; endurance spec higher).
The car is renowned for its thunderous V8 sound, linear power delivery, and forgiving handling, often praised as one of the most driver-friendly GT3 cars. It achieved strong results from debut, including podiums and wins in major endurance races. The platform remained competitive into the mid-2020s, though Mercedes-AMG has been developing an all-new successor (expected after the current homologation cycle).
