The latest update on the matter is that the Mumbai Police have solved the mystery behind the severed finger.

According to the reports, the ice cream was manufactured by Yummo’s third-party manufacturer in Indapur, Pune named Fortune Dairy Industries Pvt Ltd. Fortune Dairy, along with the brand’s other factories around the country, was issued a stop-work notice by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) shortly after the incident came to light.

During the investigation, the police found out that the severed finger belonged to an employee of Fortune Dairy’s manufacturing unit. A 24-year-old man named Omkar Pote had cut and lost the tip of his finger while filling ice cream cones on 11th May 2024.

After this, the Mumbai Police collected Pote’s fingerprint and DNA samples and sent them to the forensic science laboratory in Kalina to check if it was his finger. They also sent Pote’s blood samples for forensic testing to check if he was suffering from any disease which could get transferred to the consumers of the ice creams manufactured in the same batch.

The Mumbai Police received the lab results on 27th June 2024. The fingerprint and DNA reports showed that Pote’s samples matched perfectly with the severed finger, confirming that the finger belonged to him. On the other hand, Pote’s blood sample reports confirmed that he did not suffer from any disease that could pose health risks for the consumers.

Senior Inspector Ravi Adane of Mumbai’s Malad Police Station blamed Pote and the factory’s supervisor for negligence for not reporting the incident and letting the contaminated batch be packed and shipped for sale to the customers. Inspector Adane also announced that the Mumbai Police will send a notice to the concerned people at Fortune Dairy Industries Pvt Ltd under section 41 of the Criminal Procedure Code. This section allows the police officers to arrest any person without a warrant and an order from the Magistrate.

The FSSAI has permanently suspended the licence of Fortune Dairy Industries Pvt Ltd.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining high standards of hygiene and safety in food production.
