I'm checking out the VVT in the boosted Miata and trying to figure out why it is not working. In this video, I remove all the VVT components and inspect them.
The VVT system consists of an oil feed tube that runs on top of the valve cover into an oil control valve that sends oil into the VVT actuator that is an integral part of the intake cam gear. The VVT actuator is defaulted to a retarded timing position and advances when pressurized with oil.
Overtime, the VVT system may begin to leak and be non-functional (usually throws an engine code) because of aging o-rings preventing adequate oil pressure. Other failures may be due to blockage of the oil filter at the end of the oil feed tube that goes into the casing or by other oil pressure losses caused by a failing or under-powered oil pump for example.
Tools you'll need:
10mm socket to remove various hex head bolts
17mm socket to remove intake cam gear
T25 torx to remove access plate
