When testing an antenna with a RigExpert analyzer, you typically hear advice about using a counterpoise or proper grounding for accurate readings. While that’s generally good practice, I’ve found something interesting: if you bring the RigExpert right up to your face during the test, you often don’t need a counterpoise at all.
Your body acts like a giant ground plane. By simply holding the analyzer close—literally up to your face—you provide enough capacitance to stabilize the measurement. The RigExpert reads flawlessly, with smooth SWR curves and consistent impedance values, even in situations where a counterpoise would normally be required.
It’s not a permanent replacement for proper grounding when you’re on the air, but for quick field testing or checking an antenna match, this trick works surprisingly well.
