The Dodge Material advertising campaign became one of the most recognizable muscle car marketing efforts of the era, using humor, defiance, and raw performance to define what it meant to own a Challenger.
The most iconic spot featured Sheriff Joe Higgins, the self-appointed “Safety Sheriff,” pulling over a Plum Crazy purple Challenger R/T. What followed was a tongue-in-cheek exchange where unmistakable race hardware — including the 440 Magnum V8, Polyglas GT tires, and bold racing stripes — was passed off as everyday equipment.
The commercial closed with one of the most memorable lines in automotive advertising history:
“Boy, you in a heap of trouble.”
That moment cemented the Challenger’s reputation as a car for drivers who didn’t blend in — drivers who were, quite simply, Dodge Material.
The campaign also included other notable variations, including appearances by actress Cheryl Miller, who helped reinforce Dodge’s message that the Challenger was built for people with a spirit that refused to be tamed.
This is more than a commercial — it’s a snapshot of muscle car culture at its most rebellious.
