Exploring Brainwaves Through Music and Science
Hearing the Invisible is a powerful interdisciplinary collaboration between neuroscientists and musicians at the U of A School of Music that transforms brainwave data into sound. This innovative project uses EEG recordings from both healthy individuals and those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia, converting this neurological data into audible sound through a process called sonification. The goal is to detect early neural changes that traditional imaging methods like MRIs might miss until it’s too late.
By listening to the differences in brain activity, researchers hope to develop new tools for early diagnosis that are both accessible and easy to use. The project also bridges the gap between scientific data and human experience by turning these sonic patterns into musical compositions, including performances by live vocalists.
