Sanskritic Resonances

Semantic resonances structure the field of language.
To demonstrate this point, Lacan cites a “classical problem posed to semantics in the determinative statement, ‘a hamlet on the ganges,’ by which Hindu aesthetics illustrates the second form of the resonances of language”. (Écrits, 261).
In a footnote, Lacan clarifies that he is referring to the Indian concept of “laksanalaksanā”, the secondary meaning of a statement that is heard without being literally stated.
In Sanskrit, “a hamlet on the Ganges” is written as “gangāyām ghosah”—where “ghosah” carries the semantic resonances of “hamlet”, “the sound of speech”, “the thundering of clouds”, and “proclamation”.
Episode 3, The Gift of Speech, is now up on the @parletrepodcast YT channel, Substack (www.parletrepress.com), and Spotify.
