William Wordsworth is the author with which we begin our look at the Romantic Epic because he is the greatest of the poets of the age, but also the one whose cast of mind and poetic power dominate his contemporaries as much as the great John Milton dominates his.
In this first lecture, we begin with a description of the characteristic features of Wordsworth's grandeur as a poet, one which places him only behind Milton and Shakespeare on the English Parnassus, before moving on to look at his Two-Part Prelude. There we will already see the main features which constitute his poetic greatness and claim to epic achievement.
