There are 2 types of components, these are generally called IR receivers,
You must have seen them in many projects. The 2 terminal component is called Photo Diode, and the 3 terminal component is called TSOP IR sensor. Photo diodes are used in Line follower robots, Smoke detectors and proximity detector applications. Whereas TSOP IR sensor is used in TV, DVD, DTH Systems.
Both these components sense IR light yet their applications are different. Why can't we use Photo Diode instead of TSOP in TV or DTH? What is the major difference between Photo diode and TSOP IR receiver?
First of all let's talk about Photo Diode, when IR light falls on it then it starts conducting and current flow starts from it. IR means Infra Red light which is not visible to us, you can see it from mobile camera. Since the current also varies according to the light intensity, from this we can see that it is used for both analog signals and digital signals. But its operating distance is less, another disadvantage of photo diode is that it starts conducting even in sunlight and external room light, due to this, photodiode based circuits do not work properly in sunlight.
Photo diode, its sensitivity being less, we cannot use it in TV or DTH Receiver.
It has an external noise filter, it only receives IR based Modulated digital signal. On pressing the button of TV remotes or DTH remotes a specific code is transmitted with 38Khz carrier frequency. TSOP IR receiver separates out the 38KHz carrier signal and transfers the transmitted button codes to the circuit for further processing. This is called demodulation. Due to the modulation and demodulation process, it can work over long distances up to 20 feet.
The disadvantage of TSOP is that it can only process digital signals, we cannot use it for analog, but we can definitely make proximity detectors. TSOP1738 and TSOP1838 are commonly used.
