The American Spirit, a 1,004-foot self-unloading bulk carrier, became the final vessel to pass through the Soo Locks for the 2025–26 Great Lakes shipping season.
Her last load of the season consisted of iron ore pellets, known as taconite, bound for Conneaut, Ohio.
Each winter, the Soo Locks close between January 15 and March 25 to allow for annual maintenance and repairs. As ice coverage increases across the Great Lakes, conditions become more hazardous for navigation, and most vessels enter winter layup.
For the American Spirit, that layup is in Toledo — a period of rest, maintenance, and preparation before the shipping season resumes in the spring.
