In most cases, in a military justice matter the service will provide you with a free military defense attorney. However, given the sometimes dire consequences of being found guilty, particularly in a court martial, it may be in your best interest to hire a civilian attorney with military experience. Civilian attorneys are not part of the military and can investigate your case and raise issues about high ranking officials without fear of damaging their careers. The free military defense lawyer may have a caseload in the hundreds and not have the time to dive deeply into your case, particularly if it's complex. A civilian military defense lawyer can devote all the resources necessary to mount a strong defense.
