US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has described Jammu and Kashmir as an “important part of India,” prompting a diplomatic protest from Pakistan.

Gor made the statement during his first visit to the Union Territory after assuming his diplomatic position. During the trip, he met Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Srinagar and discussed regional development, security, tourism and India-US relations.

The ambassador praised steps taken by India’s central government and the Union Territory administration to improve security. He also indicated that Washington could reconsider its travel advisory for Jammu and Kashmir, although no immediate change was announced.

Pakistan strongly objected to Gor’s description of the region. Its foreign ministry summoned the senior American diplomat in Islamabad and lodged a formal protest, calling the statement factually incorrect and contrary to Pakistan’s position that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally disputed territory.

India maintains that the entire Union Territory is an integral and inseparable part of the country and rejects foreign intervention in the matter. Pakistan administers a separate portion of the former princely state and continues to dispute India’s sovereignty over the region.

Gor’s exact phrase—“important part of India”—has attracted particular attention. Some reports have inaccurately quoted him as saying “integral part,” which carries stronger diplomatic meaning and closely reflects India’s official language.

The comment is politically significant, but it does not necessarily represent a complete change in Washington’s formal Kashmir policy. Any major policy shift would normally require a clear statement from the US State Department or White House.
