A special sighting of the elusive Red Duiker on Somkhanda Game Reserve by Wildlife ACT Intern, Lucy Chimes:
I had been sitting stationary in the vehicle for two hours at sunrise waiting for the Wild Dogs to wake up, so these two Red Duikers were more comfortable in the quiet and came out onto the road. I got to watch them for about 10 minutes but when I made a slight movement, they ran off.
Red Duiker are quite common in KwaZulu-Natal, but they live in dense habitats, so you often only get a glimpse of them crossing a road or open area before they disappear again. Both males and females have horns so it’s difficult to differentiate between the sexes. While they are usually solitary, they can form pairs like these two in the video.
