You’ve drained your fresh water system, bypassed the water heater, and run pink antifreeze through your lines… but before you check “done” on winterization, there’s one more critical step too many RV owners overlook: protecting your holding tanks.

Here’s the thing — even after you dump and rinse, there’s always a little water left behind in your gray and black tanks. And when that leftover liquid freezes, it expands and can crack sensors, seals, and fittings. 💸 One cracked dump valve or frozen tank can easily turn into hundreds in repairs.

So here’s how to do it right 👇

1️⃣ Dump & flush both tanks completely.
If your RV has a tank flush system, use it — this clears out sludge and residue that can freeze into a solid mess.

2️⃣ Close your valves once everything’s empty — don’t leave them open during storage.

3️⃣ Add non-toxic RV antifreeze directly into both tanks. About a half-gallon in each is a good rule of thumb for average-sized rigs. This coats the bottom of the tanks, keeps sensors lubricated, and protects dump valves from sticking.

4️⃣ Don’t forget the traps! Pour a little antifreeze down each sink and shower drain to protect the P-traps and keep odors sealed during storage.

💬 Pro Tip: Pour an extra quart of antifreeze down the toilet and flush once to push some fluid into the black tank — this protects the gate valve and the seals inside the flush system.
