More than three thousand refugees from the fighting in Liberia were allowed to leave a rusty and leaking freighter at the Ghanaian port of Takoradi on Tuesday (14/5) after more than a week at sea in appalling conditions. Ghana, which turned the ship away on Monday (13/5) after letting it dock briefly, finally gave permission for the Nigerian-registered Bulk Challenge to discharge its human cargo after the United Nations and the European Union promised aid for
the refugees.
