In 1955, the U.S. government launched Operation Teapot at Yucca Flat, Nevada — a terrifying display of Cold War optimism and civil defense propaganda. This footage captures a disturbing reality: over 9,000 American soldiers placed in trenches, tanks parked less than a mile from detonation, and mock suburban homes — called “Survival Town” — rigged with mannequins to “prove” nuclear survivability.
Scenes from Bikini Atoll, Los Alamos, and Mercury Test Site expose the scale of atomic testing, as scientists and soldiers stand dangerously close to the blasts. The voiceover confidently declares survival is possible — even as mushroom clouds rise over ships, and soldiers brush radioactive dust off each other with brooms.
This footage was meant to reassure the public. Instead, it’s a chilling relic of a time when governments gambled with human lives in the name of progress.
This moment was Lost To History — but now you’re seeing it.
