Help! Can I stop a Jewish intermarriage?

Someone asked me a question about intermarriage. This is a sensitive subject. Unfortunately, this is all a familiar situation for virtually all secular populations outside of the Land of Israel. Secular Jewish people who are not connected or invested in their precious heritage are increasingly apathetic towards intermarriage with surrounding people. Intermarriage often produces children who are not Jewish, contrary to the heretical groups who claim otherwise. These heretical communities are on the fast track to disappearing, in large part due to the platforms they championed. What can we do?

The Chabad has championed outreach and succeeded in great ways in reaching out to individuals born into the secular Jewish world. In fact, attendance at Chabad synagogues has recently grown to be larger than both reform and conservative, essentially demoting their positions in the hierarchy of membership numbers. Even with this tremendous success, there is much more to do.

Individuals who seek to engage in relationships with non-Jewish individuals are difficultly persuaded to see the pitfalls of their perspective. They are more focused on themselves and what's in front of their eyes than the perspective of morality, which will leave them emotionally and physically unfulfilled in the short term.

Those who see intermarriage as a non-option are the people who will continue to thrive and create future Jewish generations. Those who are apathetic to this issue often quickly see their generations out of the holy camp within a generation or two.

Still, from among the darkness of exile, Jews of illegitimate relationships and the "Seed of Israel" find themselves longing to connect with the holy path of their ancestors. Such souls are remarkable. While the "Seed of Israel" (children of Jewish fathers but non-Jewish mothers) require a halachic conversion to become Jewish, they are usually more speedily accepted into the conversion process once they have demonstrated their desire to live a Torah life.

Illegitimate relationships are not tolerated, and they are not even considered marriage at all by the Torah. Still, a measure of compassion should be shown to those involved, who are so heavily steeped in darkness, they can't distinguish between light and dark.
