Ever since Alexandria was a little girl she loved watching shows like COPS and true crime shows, and seeing how people breaking the law were always picked up, arrested, and thrown in jail. It scared her, and the fear of ever going to jail or prison made her promise herself that she would never end up in that position.

As she got to be a teen, she started to think about what she wanted to do and who she might want to be as an adult. She set her goals and career paths on law enforcement, a police officer. She wanted to become someone who would protect and serve, who would help people, and of course, she wished to never be on the wrong side of that or in jail.

But, one day along the way she made a very bad decision. She decided that she would get some alcohol and drink. She had had a terrible day and just wanted to hang out with her best friend before he went back to school - that's what was really getting to her, once he left she would be alone, again. Maybe she thought getting drunk with him in the park and in her car would make it more fun, or memorable since he was about to leave for college.

They went to a movie, then to the liquor store, and then straight to a park to hang out. They were under the legal drinking age. They kicked a soccer ball around, hung out and talked, and then started drinking. Before they knew it they had finished an entire bottle of vodka and a big bottle of wine.

Suddenly it started raining, hard, so they ran back to the car and just sat in the backseat together, drinking - getting drunk - and talking while the hours ticked away. They got so drunk that they lost track of time - it was actually past midnight - and so didn't pay attention to the fact that they had both missed their curfews and had been expected back home by their parents.

They ended up passing out in the backseat and Alexandria finally woke up to police cars, with their lights on, surrounding them. A policeman came up to her asking for her license. She had a glimmer of hope that everything would be okay - but it wasn't. She hardly remembers what happened, but she ended up in the backseat of a police car, driving to the station.

She was being arrested, and had to give her fingerprints and got three phone calls. Finally she reached her grandparents who then called her Mom who then got super mad, called her, and yelled at her. She was an underage drinker.

They took her to the back of the station where they took her blood and test her urine. Alexandria had some scars on her arms and legs, from when she had battled with doing self-harm, and cutting, and when the police saw that they put her into the "special side" of the jail, the suicide prevention side where they made her wear a padded dress with velcro fasteners so you can't hurt yourself. Embarrassing!

Alexandria spent a day and a half in jail, but it felt like it was years and years. When she was finally allowed to leave she didn't know how to feel, or what to do - the experience had been so scary, and so awful, and it was exactly the thing she had sworn she would never let happen.

Her Mom picked her up, and they had to pay the court almost $300 for bail, and then another $200 to pick her car up from being impounded.

She went back to court and counseling to see a doctor who put her on anti-depressant medication because the experience and anxiety of being arrested and put in a jail cell, and her intense fear of that very thing, had her worried and anxious and unable to sleep.

Even after five months, the thought of being in jail still haunts her. She's afraid to drive, has pushed people, sadly, out of her life, all because she is afraid that something bad will end up happening, she'll make or get coaxed into another bad decision, and will end up back in jail.

She knows what to avoid, and she knows what could happen if she doesn't. Hopefully soon, she will trust herself enough to put it behind her and move on into the future she had planned for herself.
