Philadelphia's favorite groove band [Swift Technique] teams up with classic Philly rappers [Kuf Knotz, Rok Bottom and Carlos] to recreate a funky new version of Fly Eagles Fly.
The Eagles' "Victory Song" was the creation of Charles Borrelli and Roger Courtland in the late 1950s and fully brought to life in 1963, when then owner Jerry Wolman purchased the Eagles' and founded The Philadelphia Eagles' Sound of Brass band in 1964 to record it. The group included 200 musicians and dancers, and was led by Arlen Saylor, who was appointed as the Eagles' entertainment director in 1966 and is credited with penning an arrangement of the fight song that the band played at home games during halftime in the 1960s. The song disappeared from Eagles history though in the 1970s and was re-born through Jeffery Lurie’s tenure as owner but now, for the fist time in it’s 70 year history…the song’s got some FUNK.
“We wanted to bring back the original vibe which was really all about the Brass” says Swift Technique founding member Ian Gray who is also a Mummer!. It was always a dream for the band to revamp the old classic but then — it happened spontaneously.
“Those of us that weren’t at the Linc for last week’s game were all watching it together at my house. And when we stopped the Falcons to win? We all broke out in tears and hugs and then…..music. We started marching through Roxborough like the Mummers or a New Orleans Mardi Gras brigade. We started riffing on the original version of the Eagles fight song and soon the streets were packed and everyone was DANCING. That was one of our goals here - to bump the fight song up one notch so folks can dance do it”.
Local music entrepreneur Andy Blackman Hurwitz was one of those dancing in the streets and implored the band to record a short version of the track for the big game this weekend vs. the Vikings.
“It was a big party in there” said Hurwitz, like all involved, a die-hard lifelong Eagles fan. “This is as much about community as it is sports - the Eagles bring us all together and we hope this song adds a little bit of a soundtrack to those moments” Hurwitz Adds.
It was also a great chance to bring back the Burn-Down All-stars featuring Kuf Knotz, Roc Bottom and Carlos who were hanging at the studio while the song was being recorded and laced it with 12 bars of sublime poetry paying head to the Eagles past, present and future.
“The Eagles bring us all together in Philly - no matter your color, how much money you have or don’t have, or even what kind of music you listen to - we all bleed green here in Philly and we’re all so proud of this team - they represent us perfectly well - like Rocky did back in the day” added Kuf Knotz who relishes the Birds underdog status in this weeks matchup vs. the Vikings. “Don’t sleep on the Eagles….and Don’t Sleep on PHILLY” added Roc Bottom while gazing out into space, dreaming of playing this song down Broad Street to celebrate the coveted Super Bowl Trophy.
“One Day” answered Kuf Knotz.
Let’s hope that day comes soon.
