In July 2025 I ended up on an unintentional adventure exploring the Red River, Red River Station, Nocona, Texas, Spanish Fort, Texas, and Saint Jo, Texas.
I also drove down into the Red River to see it from that point of view.
While you may see the name Chisholm Trail in different areas of Texas, all of those feeder trails lead to the Red River Station. Drovers herding Texas Longhorns to Red River Station on their way to Kansas also frequented Spanish Fort and the Stonewall Saloon in Saint Jo.
If the Texas cattle drive and Chisholm Trail doesn't make the area unique enough, Nocona was also the home of H.J. Justin Boot Company (Justin Boots), Nocona Boot Company, and now Fenoglio Boot Company. H.J. Justin and Enid Justin (Nocona Boots) are actually both buried in the Nocona Cemetery.
Nocona is also the home of Nokona Leather Goods (est 1926) which is the last baseball glove manufacturer that still makes baseball gloves in the USA.
But wait, there's more.....
In 1894, four men robbed the First National Bank in Bowie, Texas and got away with $18,000 cash and $10,000 in $20 gold pieces. The men were caught, and the cash was recovered, but the gold is said to be buried along the Red River near U.S. 81. Today that gold has a value of $21 million dollars.
This is a great North Texas weekend adventure.
