This presentation seeks to understand what God made on the second day. The MT enscribes the term רקיע and the Septuagint translates this as στερεωμα, which means something hard or solid. In turn the Latin Vulgate translated the Septuagint as Firmamentum and our early English versions as firmament literally transliterating the term into English. All understandings of the term רקיע go back to the book of Ezekiel and intertestamental testimony for the notion of the רקיע solidity and ancient Near Eastern historical cultural background information on their cosmologies.
