“We stand on the shoulders of women who came before us.”
Four centuries ago, one of those women stood here in Ferryland. Lady Sara Kirke.
Lady Sara Kirke is recognized as the first and most successful female entrepreneur in early European North America. For 40 years, she led a thriving enterprise in Ferryland, owning more fishing stages, boats, and cod liver oil vats than anyone else on the English Shore.
Much like the mythical Isle of Avalon for which the colony was named, Lady Sara Kirke’s triumphant legacy has drifted into the fog of history.
This International Women’s Day, we are proud to bring her story back to life, celebrating her extraordinary strength, endurance, and grit.
Filmed, produced, and edited by the remarkable Roger Maunder of Up Sky Down Films, featuring the captivating performance of Christa Suzanne Borden as Lady Sara Kirke.
Written by Renee Houlihan, the compelling storyteller and Executive Director of the Colony of Avalon.
Lady Sara Kirke is one of the most important figures in the early history of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, and North America, yet most people have never heard her name.
We hope you enjoy this short film bringing her story to life.
Please share so the the world can finally hear the forgotten story of one of Newfoundland’s greatest heroines
