As the federal government moves to enshrine gender identity and gender expression into the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code, the proposed legislation has ignited a national conversation. Supporters argue it’s a vital step toward equality for transgender Canadians, while critics warn it could compel speech and undermine freedom of expression.

In studio, Jordan Peterson, professor of psychology at the University of Toronto, explains why he believes Bill C-16 poses a threat to free speech and academic freedom. Nicholas Matte, lecturer in Transgender Studies at the same university, challenges that view with a perspective rooted in human rights and lived experience.
