In the Ramayana, we have all heard the story of Hanuman lifting a mountain to bring the Sanjeevani herb to save Lakshman's life. Similarly, we've seen hydraulic jacks lift cars and cranes hoist heavy objects. Recently, a remarkable video on social media shows workers lifting houses using jacks in Biratnagar, eastern Nepal. Due to road elevation improvements in Biratnagar, houses that were below road level and prone to flooding are being raised. Some houses are even being moved to new locations without demolition.
For example, Dinbandhu Goyal lifted his house by nearly four feet to elevate it above the road level and moved another building to a new spot. Rakesh Surana elevated his single-story building in Duhabi by four and a half feet, and Rajendra Raut moved a two-story building 55 feet back to construct a new hospital.
House lifting involves removing heavy items from the house, digging around the foundation, and inserting long beams or steel plates. Hydraulic or manual jacks are placed underneath, and the house is gradually raised by turning the jacks. House shifting involves similar steps but includes moving the house to a new foundation via rollers.
While this technique is common in India, where houses are lifted to avoid flooding or relocated due to construction projects, it is relatively new in Nepal. Contractors and workers from India are often involved. Though lifting and shifting can slightly weaken the house's structure, it offers an alternative to demolition. This method costs about 10-15% of new construction and can be completed in two to two and a half months.
