In low concentrations, surfactants in water exist as isolated molecules. Above a certain concentration, called the critical micelle concentration (CMC), they spontaneously form nanosized structures called micelles. When micelles are present above the CMC, they can act as emulsifiers that will allow a compound that is normally insoluble (in the solvent being used) to dissolve.
