The first challenge for home health workers is time constraints. Since they see multiple patients each day at different locations, they only have so much time they can dedicate to each client. One nurse reported seeing six patients each day, leaving a two-hour block for each visit.
But sometimes, she had more patients if the team needed additional help somewhere else. As a result, patients might not be getting the necessary help when the health worker isn’t around. And as the aging population grows, these workers will have more patients but less time with them.
The next difficulty is the concern for safety. A health worker never knows what they might walk into when they enter a stranger’s home. These people often work alone, increasing their risks for hazards.
Workplace violence is a common problem in the health industry, but even worse for home health workers. This environment is the most susceptible to verbal abuse, aggression, threats, and sexual harassment.
Up to 61% of home health workers experienced this violence. There are other safety concerns too if the home is unclean, such as exposure to harmful substances or illness.
Overexertion injuries can result from moving a patient if they lack the necessary equipment. And falls, slips, and trips are more common for the elderly if their homes aren’t handicapped accessible. These incidents are difficult to handle and manage for a health worker who is alone and lacks proper equipment.
Since they often work alone, they also lack support. They can’t easily ask another staff member for help like they’d be able to do in a care facility. If something goes wrong, there are no other professionals on site to help out. As workers need to care for more people to keep up with demand, it’s even harder to get support from other staff.
There also may be less support from the patient’s family. Since the client has home health assistance, relatives may think they don’t need help regardless of the few hours that a health worker is there. And in some cases, the patient has no family which is why they need home health in the first place.
As more people get older, there will be a larger population that rely on home health services. While these workers already face challenges, it will likely get more difficult. It’s necessary to manage challenges before the industry becomes overwhelmed by the larger elderly population. Mitigating struggles now will make it easier to provide care and keep patients healthy.
