Over the course of Father's Day Weekend, The Big Banana Railfan along with TRAINMAN K & Train Chamber spent two days worth of filming and photographing the Black River & Western Railroad's regular excursion trains. The BR&W's pride and joy, 2-8-0 Consolidation #60, was the power for nearly the entire weekend and a great crew combined with a great locomotive made for quite the show! The locomotive was sporting a GTW 6 Chime whistle which sounded incredible as it echoed through the New Jersey countryside. In addition, SW1 #9206 in the Pennsylvania paint scheme is seen at work both in switching and preparing the regular train. As a special treat, we also get a look inside the cab of #60!
#60 was built by ALCO's Schenectady Works in 1937 for the Great Western Railway in Colorado where she spent her working life hauling sugar beet and molasses trains. Purchased by the BR&W in 1961, #60 pulled the first scheduled tourist train over the line in May of 1965 and has seen many different appearances over the years. Here we see her in an appearance reminiscent of how she looked during World War II, with a graphite smokebox and the signature Great Western diamonds seen on the cab and rear of the tender.
Enjoy!
