Three unnamed sources familiar with the investigation told the newspaper that federal investigators seized the phone of Omar’s sister, Sahra Noor, earlier this year. Authorities were examining whether the Somalia-born congresswoman had conspired to commit immigration fraud after arriving in the United States in the 1990s.

According to the Times, investigators used the text messages to secure a federal judge’s approval for a search by Department of Homeland Security agents on October 12. During the raid, authorities seized Omar’s phone, passport, notebooks and personal computers.
